The Principles of Digital Decorum

“True courtesy is as much in the heart as in the hand.”

The Tenets of Online Etiquette

The internet, much like society, thrives upon unspoken rules of conduct. To navigate it with grace is the mark of a true gentleman.

1. Address Others with Respect

One does not barge into a ballroom shouting; likewise, one does not enter an online space with hostility. Greet others as you would in polite company.

2. Mind Your Grammar and Spelling

A well-structured sentence is the calling card of an educated mind. Take but a moment to proofread before you post.

3. Refrain from Excessive Emoticons and Abbreviations

While an occasional flourish is acceptable, one must not allow ‘LOL’ and ‘XD’ to replace the art of genuine expression.

4. The Rule of Brevity and Clarity

While verbosity has its charm, one must not drown the reader in unnecessary words. Speak concisely, but with elegance.

5. Never Engage in Flame Wars

To argue for the sake of argument is a pastime of lesser minds. If discourse turns sour, bow out with dignity.

6. The Courtesy of Proper Attribution

Should you borrow the wisdom of another, do them the honor of proper credit. Plagiarism is the greatest sin of the learned.
